Draw Poker Strategies

The game of draw poker is one of the first poker games that most people learned to play before the rise of Texas hold'em. Draw poker games are still happening on most online poker sites, and there is a lot of money to be made in these games if you play with the right strategies.

Before the draw, you should come in for a raise in early position with any made hand that's a pair of Aces or better. Coming in for a raise or a call with any draw except for an open-ended straight-flush draw is a losing play. In late position, you can add pairs of Kings and pairs of Queens to your open-raising ranges, but you should still avoid opening bare flush draws or bare straight draws. Stealing on the button with a bare flush draw can be a good play as long as you have big cards in your hand that can make big pairs as well.

When it's time to draw, go ahead and discard three when you have a big pair if you're in early position. Discarding two cards in that situation is a bad play because you lose too much equity in the hand when you only get two chances to make three of a kind. In late position, you should mix up your discards a bit more. If you open raise on the button with Aces or Kings, you should always discard three. However, if you open raise with a smaller pair, you should discard two instead, keeping your highest kicker. This makes your opponents check to you more often, allowing you to avoid difficult situations with marginal pairs.
